It has been a good summer for brambles. You did not encounter the worst undergrowth Brockhampton has to offer

There is a lot more to Brockhampton than you saw. Next time, when the NT have more hardstanding available and winter has softened the vegetation up a bit - we will be able to offer courses up to Brown

There are some really special "faerie glens" with waterfalls and ferns
and crags and not-to-many brambles - unique in Herefordshire - hopefully next time we can run you through them
It is much more stressful planning without a controller
Lurking in the undergrowth with my camera I noticed quite a number of
experienced orienteers wasting time through ineffective or non-application of 'navigation management'. Not a problem if you are just out for a bit of exercise - but most of these folks seemed to be trying hard and several were annoyed to have wasted time:

Ø Being lazy about attack points

Ø failing to use all the information available (tips and tricks are charged at £1.00 a minute on 0845 10234 4562)

Ø not slowing down to read the map - I received a couple of 'slag offs'
about brambles and so on - when if they had looked carefully there was a "white forest" or path option

Ø failing to mark the control points accurately

Ø accidentally navigating to the wrong control

Ø hanging around the control checking the map - when there was plenty of time on-the-way-in to decide the-best-way-out

Ø aimlessly wandering into a forest block - instead of doing a bit of
'rough compass and pacing'

I know how much time all the above failures-of-discipline waste - because I have made all the above mistakes myself!

Organiser’s Comments Robert Vickers

Once upon a time, long ago, there was a gamekeeper who knew and loved every corner of these woodlands, as he went about his work by day and by night; rearing the birds, controlling the vermin, deterring the poachers, and organising the shooting. He lived in a cottage on the estate, and he had a little boy called Robert who, at the age of five, set out across the fields to the school on the downs. Yes – that gamekeeper was my dad, so the chance to organise this event was a real bit of nostalgia for me!

The superb weather showed the area off at its best, and it is a pity that the constraints on car parking did not allow more people to come and enjoy it on this occasion. Judging by the times, David’s courses seem to have proved quite challenging. I know that he intentionally set the Green course at the top end of the standard, to provide a worthwhile course for those who would normally have run Blue.

As a “Local” event with experienced Planner and Organiser, we lacked the benefit of a Controller; but I am confident that the quality of the event was not compromised as a result. As Organiser, I therefore had one tricky decision to make in respect of a number of runners on Green (mainly very experienced people who should have known better) who failed to punch at the 2^nd/3^rd Master Maps. I was minded to name, shame, and disqualify them, but David was of a more kindly disposition – so in a rare mood of generosity they have been re-instated. However, I certainly would not have been so forgiving in any event of higher status – so be warned!
