Summer Series

This year we are hoping to increase the number of low-key summer events, mixing Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings. The annual June Jaunter (see right) remains on a Thursday evening.

If you crave weekday evening orienteering, our neighbour clubs Wrekin Orienteers and Octavian Droobers hold their summer evening events on Tuesdays and Wednesdays respectively. City of Birmingham OC also hold training activities on Wednesday evenings at Sutton Park.

Rules

Format
A series of informal Saturday morning or Thursday evening events held from April/May to July/August each year with nominal entry fees.
SI may be used depending on the format and location. For urban events controls might be stickers on street furniture or similar.
They provide an opportunity for members to gain experience in course planning, but any member may volunteer to organise one. No Controller is appointed, but novice planners may seek guidance from club Controllers as necessary. Organisers should consult the 2017 Summer Evening Event Guidelines.
A nearby pub or cafe may be used for post-event course analysis but some events will be run from the back of a car by the organiser.

Format
Events have a format whereby there is one course and controls are taken in order and will each be worth 10 points. Controls can be missed out but any taken out of sequence will not count. For example, 1-2-3- -5-6 scores 50 but 1-2-5-3-6 only scores 40 because 3 was taken out of sequence.

The time limit will be at the discretion of the organiser from say 45 minutes on a very small area to 90 minutes on a large one. Any time over this will be penalised at the rate of 1 point for each 6 seconds or part thereof late. The fastest may possibly clear all controls just inside the time limit but for most it will be a matter of deciding which ones to miss or when to quit and head for the finish.

There will be a Ladies and Mens Trophy at the end of the series for the respective winners.

Notes

Summer Series events are flexible, relaxed and low key. Times and courses offered may vary from event to event to suit the constraints of the area and the whims of the organiser. If in doubt check the details or ask the organiser.

Anyone can come to an Summer event - you do not have to be a member, you do not need to have orienteered before, they are great fun.

Participants are responsible for their own safety and take part at their own risk. PLEASE NOTE that the carrying of whistles is compulsory at all HOC events (we will have a few to hire or borrow).

June Jaunter

This is a timed mini-fell run around Clent and Walton Hills. Starting from Nimmings car park, competitors have to visit the trig points at the top of Clent and Walton Hills, and the stile by Clent Church, in any order. If you can beat 20 minutes, you're doing very well. The June Jaunter archive (Excel spreadsheet) contains a complete set of times up to and including 2017. This year the June Jaunter will be part of the league, with 25 points to anyone who completes it.
