From John Bennison:
ALAN MASON
(1940 – 2007)
|
Alan died on 17 November after a mountain bike accident. He was a founding member of Harlequins OC in 1968, Manager of the British Squad from 1975 to 1981 and the driving force behind the establishment of orienteering in South Africa in 1982.
Alan's cheerful personality and enthusiasm for everything in life made friends everywhere. He was always encouraging and ever helpful to Squad members ... and to all of his friends.
During a job in the Philippines, he came to love the country and its people. Although most had little material wealth, they were rich in the generosity of their hospitality and the warmth of their friendship. He returned often and made a significant difference to the lives of many young people there, paying for the education they could not afford.
He is greatly missed.

The first Harlequins Logo?
The earliest appearance of "the little HOC man" in the newsletter achives is July 1971. In this newsletter 'badges' are mentioned and 'certificates' - so it is possibly that Harley was first created for these. Or perhaps the newsletter editor copied the logo from a map. Can anyone help?

Worcs County Council have decided to make savings and close their Outdoor Ed centre , Llanrug in N Wales (although this means a reprieve for Malvern which was also under threat) . A petition has been set up on the Prime Minister's web site at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/llanrug If you would like to visit this site and 'sign' the petition perhaps we can stop the closure of another Outdoor Centre.

Harlequins @ Speyside
Dear All
Just returned home to find that www.scotlandontv.tv has a great little
video article on Spey 2007 taken at Inshriach West on day 3 including
a few almost carefully hidden Harlequins. Take a look and see if you
can spot Suzette Spears, Lynden Hartman and Lesley Brown carrying out
their pre-race exercise.
Lynden again picking up her map; a figure suspiciously like Robert
Farrington and another looking like a camera shy Lizzie White. Finally
watch for a great George Chambers cameo inclusive of hat!
Great event, very tired but already preparing for Tayside 2009.
Thanks for all the great HOC support, company and banter.
Regards,
Lester and Judith Evans
You can a very (large number) of photos here. Thanks to Lester Evans and Sue Chambers

ITV want you!
- providing you are
"a single, athletic and fit man aged 20 – 45 who is passionate about being active, sporty and clean living"
Here is the message sent to Harlequins:
Hi David,
I'm working on a new ITV series which brings together people with differing views or lifestyles – and I wondered if you might be able to help as we're looking for someone very sporty and active to take part.
The programme is all about two 'opposites' going on a date together. We're looking for a single, athletic and fit man aged 20 – 45 who is passionate about being active, sporty and clean living. He also needs to be interested in trying something completely different and showing an attractive single woman how he lives his life.
He would get to spend 4 days with an attractive single girl who has a completely different lifestyle. They would each have 2 days to show the other how they live – the idea being that they each experience a different way of living and then see if romance blooms! As well as addressing important lifestyle issues, it will also be lots of fun. We'd like to talk to anyone who's interested as soon as possible.
I've also attached a flyer and would be really grateful if you could pass this info on to your members. Anyone interested should contact myself:
Isabel Cook
020 72618199
isabel.cook@itv.com
It would be great if we found someone through your club! Thanks and don't hesitate to contact me should you have any queries or know anyone personally who might like to take part.
Best wishes,
Isabel

CLENT HILLS
JUNE JAUNTER - Thursday 21st June 2007
Time to think about the June Jaunter again! Harlequins'
traditional Midsummer event is in the 2007 programme!
Meet at the Nimmings Car Park between 6.30 pm and 7.15 pm for
a timed footpath run/mini Fell Race. Map ref: SO939807. Free
route choice; but you must visit the Four Stones on the top of Clent,
the stile at the back of Clent church (no short cuts through the
churchyard), and the trig point on the top of Walton Hill in any order.
All very informal and good fun. Please note that this is not
a conventional Orienteering event, and will not count towards your
score in the SEE League.
Can you beat the course record of 18 mins 59 secs set by
Barry Parkinson which has stood since 1990? Or beat your own personal
best? Or see how much faster/slower you have got over the years!
The only charge is for your car park ticket from the machine (if it is
working), unless you feel the need to buy a map.
Any enquiries to Robert Vickers on 01384 377008 or email: rvhoc-jj2006@yahoo.co.uk

A message from the club
captain about Harvester Teams...
Dear all, sorry for the delay in sending this out.
Unfortunately, SinS rather took up my time over the last few weeks.
The list below shows the Harlequins who have indicated they want to run
at the Harvester relays next weekend. I have entered us for one A team
and two B teams, one of which I expect to be a women's team. If you are
on this list, but no longer want to run, or if you aren't on it but do
want a run, please get in touch with me immediately (richardd@gmail.com
/ 0121 471 2615). Those of you with question marks after your name,
please get in touch and let me know either way.

Barry McGowan writes:
Most members, and indeed orienteers generally, will not be aware that Lynden was nominated at the BOF AGM for the Silva award which is annually given to that person who is considered to have contributed most to Orienteering. 6 persons were nominated and Mike Hamilton, BOF chief executive read out the submission for each nomination. Brian Parker was this years well deserved winner for his work on environmental matters and major event controlling and co-ordinating.
This is the notes of nomination read out by Mike Hamilton, as kindly supplied by him to me.
"Lynden Hartmann (HOC - Harlequins Orienteering Club)
Some of you will be surprised to realise that Lynden has only been
an orienteer for 9 years. During this time she has established herself as an
influential figure in the sport.
Lynden established Malvern District MADO which has been
spectacularly successful in recruiting new members through a programme of
publicity and local press coverage. Lynden has tried many innovative
approaches such as actively involving more club members in activities and
creating a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers
As the editor of the Club Newsletter Lynden introduced full colour
and a lively journalistic style
Lynden has also worked hard and successfully on other areas of
orienteering such as Event Centres and associated entertainment"

The HOC District Event Flyer has become a bit of a mess - there is no official proforma and the various examples in circulation have been through any number of versions of MSWord and are becoming increasingly difficult to format for the website. Important information is often missing.
I have designed a new version - I have kept the formatting simple and it does not look very 'attractive' but please have a look at the proposed version - here with notes and here edited for the Breakneck Bank event. Please make any suggestions for improvement - (content, form-of-words or advisory notes) to the webmaster.

Invitation from the HOC coaching team
There are still places available in the accommodation at Lakeside YMCA for the HOC training/Whitbarrow Regional event on March 10th/11th. If we fill all the beds the accommodation will be around £11 per head. It is in 2 and 4 bedded bunkrooms, and there's a kitchen, lounge, several bathrooms and a drying room on site.
You can come for the training and the accommodation and the event, or any combination of the three. The training on Saturday is at Bishop Woods (site of the last Lake District JK relays) The HOC coaching team will be on hand to set exercises and lead discussions. Entries for the Whitbarrow event are open until February 19th. And don't forget the HOC feast (everyone brings something)on the Saturday evening!
This is a great chance to train on a complex bit of Lake District terrain, run at a high quality Regional event, and have a lot of fun with other club members at the meal and post-prandial evening activities.
If you want to join us contact Ruth Lockley or Marion White to book a place.

This was received from "The BBC" - if you would like to take part - please contact Anna directly (email address below)
Dear David
I apologise for e-mailing you unexpectedly but I couldn't find an alternative contact to request your permission first. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to forward this e-mail onto the correct person, I'm not sure whether it would be Henry Morgan or Chris Morris?
We are looking for people from all over the country to take part in BBC1's brand new Saturday night show 'The People's Quiz 2007' and I wanted to invite the members of the West Midlands Orienteering Association to participate. Whilst it is a competition for individuals we would welcome teams or groups of friends to come along and audition together and there is a massive six figure prize on offer for the winner.
I would be hugely grateful if you would be kind enough to spread the word that we are looking for quiz enthusiasts and pass the details to your members. If you would like me to send some information in the post please let me know your address and I'll send out a poster and/or some flyers.
We will be holding auditions throughout January starting at the Birmingham NEC on the 7th of January. Contestants must be 16 or over.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
