Night Street League

Informal after-dark urban orienteering, controls normally numbers on street furniture.

Each event will normally consist of a 60 minute score with a mass start, normally 7:00pm. Late starts will be permitted but the common finish time will still apply. Exceptions to this format may be permitted by special pleading to the Co-ordinator.

A headlamp / torch is highly advisable, but it need not be a full-power terrain night-O one. You should also wear a light / reflective top to help ensure you are seen. Whistles are also required.

The Night Street League Co-ordinator is John Leeson

Unfortunately, the finale of the 2019/20 NSL season, a run in a new area at St Johns in Worcester, which had been organised by Ian Pickering, had to be cancelled at short notice due to the Covid 19 crisis. Nevertheless, with the help of some experienced, and some new, organisers, and our colleagues at NGOC, we managed to still put on a series of nine races across our area, which attracted a total of 65 runners who completed 168 runs between them.
The prize for the best attendance at the series goes to James Thomas who organised the first event and then competed in the remaining eight events. Mandy Mackereth, Richard Price and Peter Langmaid also competed in eight events each and John Leeson and Robert Vickers managed seven each.
The ladies series was won by Mandy Mackereth, followed by Eloise Lee and then Marian White.
The runaway winner of the men's series was Richard Price who had a perfect total of 175 points from seven counting races. John Leeson came second and James Thomas third.
Two juniors, Kieran Rose and Jacob Shabir, competed in a couple of events with parental supervision.
I have suggested to the HOC committee that we present awards to veteran members in men's and ladies categories and will advise on this after the next committee meeting. The experiment of using BP factors that I tried last year doesn't really work very well as the factors were applied to a points score, rather then to a time or the points scored in individual races.
Looking at the numbers of runners at each event it looks like events outside the Birmingham conurbation were popular, perhaps due to being more accessible to non-club members.
We had considerable interest from independent runners, particularly at the Droitwich event, where several independents enjoyed themselves so much that they turned up at the following week's WEE event at a very muddy Arrow Valley, and thoroughly enjoyed that too.
We were lucky enough to have three MapRun format events in this years series, and it appears that this is an excellent tool for organisers and participants. Maybe this will be the future of NSL events but we will need to obtain a few old smartphones for some competitors to use.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of the organisers of the events for taking on this task without which we wouldn't have a series. We had some very convivial meals in pubs after the events, which were well attended and I'd like to think that these meals keep the social side of the club going during the winter months.
I will be hoping to put on a similar series of races next winter by which time I'm sure we all hope that we will be competing again. In the meantime keep fit and healthy and wash your hands frequently!

Rules
  1. Each event will normally be a score event with a 60 minute time limit, with penalties for late returns. Late starts will be allowed but the common finish time will still apply.
  2. The former long, medium and short course trophies will be awarded to the highest-ranked Harlequins based on their performances relative to their Bert Pardoe handicaps.
  3. This is a street competition not night orienteering. The majority of events should take place in towns, streets or on paths. Short, safe stretches in open country where powerful torches are not needed may be acceptable, but must not become the norm. If competitors are sent outside towns the organizer should consider the safety of possible route choices.
  4. The planner scores 10 points; max. one such score per runner per season. If anyone plans more than one event in a season, for the second and subsequent events they plan they will receive the highest score they have achieved at an event where they actually ran.
  5. In the event of a dispute the NSL Coordinator will make a ruling.
  6. In the even more unlikely event that this ruling is not acceptable, appeal may be made to the Club Captain, or (if the NSL Coordinator and Club Captain are one and the same) the Club Chairman.

Notes

The normal time for the mass start is 7:00pm, in order to avoid the worst of the rush hour traffic.

Events use urban streets and paths, with the occasional stretch of open space or canal towpath. A headlight or torch is often useful, particularly for the longer courses, but it doesn't need to be particularly powerful - enough to see your footing and read the map.

Participants are responsible for their own safety and take part at their own risk. Courses may cross main roads and some reflective clothing is advisable.

Trophies are awarded for handicap winners at the end of the season.
